I don't like using the word "never".
To me, it sets yourself up for failure even before you have begun working towards something. We are human after all. To say that we are "never" going to do something when our natural man says the opposite about 90% of the time is absurd. What we can do, and what the Gospel of Jesus Christ tells us to do, is to try. Try harder each and every day to be a little bit better than we were the day before.
If we tell ourselves, "I'm never going to do this..." and then we turn around and do that very thing we told ourselves we weren't going to do... Well, our self esteem is lessened and we become less confident in obtaining the desired goal. However, if we tell ourselves, "I am going to try my hardest not to...", then there is courage. There is drive. There is hope.
In my mission, our mission president, President Durrant, encouraged us to STRYVE45 (Strive for five). The acronym STRYVE means, Sincerely TRY Very Enthusiastically. With the added "for five" on the end, this gave us five goals to work toward. These five things could be interchangeable. Whether those five things related to our obedience to the missionary schedule, or our willingness to serve with all of our heart, might, mind, strength, and soul, this was a tool used to improve ourselves.
Resolutions are improvements made upon oneself. They are beneficial for happiness. Resolutions take dreams, and accompanied with plans, those dreams become reality. Resolutions are to help us clean our slate. They are to mold us and shape us into what we aspire to become. Resolutions help us progress towards that perfect state we all desire.
STRYVE to make each day a better one. Make a resolution, right now, that will effect your personal happiness and the happiness of those around you. For me, I have 5 daily resolutions that will make each and every day enjoyable. And each day I will STRYVE for these five things.
#1- Read the scriptures!
#2- Brighten someone's day!
#3- Always have a prayer in my heart!
#4- Focus on what matters most!
#5- Laugh a little!
I invite all who read this to make a list of 5 things that you can STRYVE for an a daily basis.
